16 HORSEPOWER Secret South (Glitterhouse)

If ever Six By Seven had an equivalent amongst the burgeoning ranks of American alt-country bands then 16 Horsepower are those men. They've replaced the torrential rage with Nick Cave-style Old Testament fire and brimstone sermonising, but their third full-length album "Secret South" seems to tread a kindred, if localised, path. And as with the last Six By Seven long player, there are a mere handful of moments when proceedings really take flight, those being an inventive retelling of the traditional "Wayfaring Stranger" and a cover of Bob Dylan's "Nobody 'Cept You". Otherwise 16 Horsepower play by-the-numbers No Depression-style music, and in a genre as overcrowded as alt-country that's not enough to snag the casual consumer.
